Privacy Policy

ClearSplit, operated by Studio506 LLC ("we," "our," or "us"), is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the ClearSplit iOS app handles your information. Please read it carefully before using the app.
1. Information We Process
ClearSplit is designed to minimize data collection. Here is what the app works with:
- Receipt images & photos — When you choose to scan a receipt or upload a photo, that image is temporarily transmitted to a third-party cloud AI service (Microsoft Azure Document Intelligence) solely to extract item names, quantities, and prices. We do not store these images on our servers.
- Receipt data you enter manually — Item names, amounts, and split assignments you type in are stored exclusively on your device using Apple's on-device storage framework (SwiftData). This data never leaves your device unless you choose to share it.
- No account or personal information required — ClearSplit does not require you to create an account. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any personally identifying information.
2. Cloud AI Processing
When you use the receipt scanning or photo upload feature, the image is sent to Microsoft Azure Document Intelligence, a third-party AI service, to automatically identify items and prices. Please be aware of the following:
- The image is transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
- Microsoft Azure Document Intelligence processes the image to return structured data and does not store your images on our behalf.
- Microsoft's own privacy practices apply to data processed through their service. We encourage you to review Microsoft's Privacy Statement.
- Scanning is entirely optional. You can add all items manually within the app without any data ever being sent to external services.
3. Local Data Storage
All bill splits, breakdowns, item lists, and calculation history are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. This data is included in your device's standard iCloud Backup if you have iCloud Backup enabled — that backup is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not ours. We do not have access to this data.
4. Anonymous Usage Analytics
To help us understand which features are most useful and to improve ClearSplit over time, we collect anonymous usage analytics through Mixpanel, a third-party analytics provider. Specifically:
- What's collected: Which features you use (for example, manual split creation versus receipt scanning), how long actions take, whether features like receipt scanning succeed, your app version, and your tip calculation preference.
- What's never collected: Your name, contacts, payment handles (such as Venmo or Cash App usernames), item names, prices, or any contents of the splits you create. None of this leaves your device for analytics purposes.
- How you're identified: Mixpanel uses an anonymous, randomly-generated device identifier that cannot be linked to your real-world identity. We do not associate analytics events with any account, email, or personally identifying information — because we do not collect any.
- How to opt out: You can disable anonymous usage analytics at any time within the app under Settings → Privacy. Once disabled, no further analytics events will be sent from your device.
- Mixpanel's policies: Data sent to Mixpanel is also governed by their privacy practices. We encourage you to review Mixpanel's Privacy Policy.
We do not display advertisements, do not use ad-tracking frameworks, and do not sell, trade, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Turning analytics off stops new data from being sent immediately. Data that has already been transmitted remains in our analytics provider's systems for their standard retention period.
5. Children's Privacy
ClearSplit is available to users of all ages. Because we do not require account creation and do not collect any personally identifying information from our users, there is no distinction in how the app handles data based on age. We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any other personally identifying information from anyone who uses the app.
The optional receipt scanning feature transmits only the receipt image for processing — no user profile, age, or identity is associated with that request. Anonymous usage analytics described in Section 4 use a randomly-generated device identifier that cannot be linked to a real-world identity. Parents and guardians can feel confident that ClearSplit does not build user profiles or store any personal data about their children or anyone else.
6. Data Security
All network communications between ClearSplit and the cloud AI service are encrypted using industry-standard TLS/HTTPS. Because receipt data is stored only on your device, your information is protected by your device's own security (passcode, Face ID, Touch ID).
7. Your Choices
You are always in control:
- Skip scanning entirely — Use the manual item entry feature at any time without sending data anywhere.
- Disable usage analytics — Open the app and go to Settings → Privacy to turn off anonymous usage analytics. No further events will be sent once this is off.
- Delete your data — Deleting the ClearSplit app from your device removes all locally stored data permanently.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
